STAGE II of Intrapreneurship.

STAGE II of Intrapreneurship. Today my initial idea and now company startup project has moved to a project stage, meaning it will get funded and will potentially start to move from research stage to planning to execution.

My collegue and I have been seeling our idea across top management for a while now, but the real push was gained after the CEO saw the potential.  What are the results? Well, now the project has gained grand scale.  My collegue and I have been included in the guide team. Which is a win, and wheels are turning. Potential losses though have to do with loss of responsibility, loss of brand name and time. It will take potentially a lot longer to launch the initiative and I wasn’t made the project manager. Honestly, I’m not sure if I wanted to be the manager, however executive team talked widely about having an E (entrepreneurship) type character to be the PM, (which is me) so I guess I’m bummed I wasn’t offered a spot to compete.  Also the project has lost its original name, as well as the idea itself has changed a lot, from an eagle it became a whale.  It almost reminds me of being a venture backed startup founder with no real shares in the business-as an analogy I guess.

I’m grateful to stay as a Driver on a team and making sure the vision is being executed as well as being an implementer.  Now I’m also convinced more than ever that intrapreneurship is more about Leading Change and getting everyone on board than anything else. In any case, we have a top level buy-in, and now it is becoming a company idea.  So it is working.  With trials, wins and losses it is moving forward which is great.

I’m thinking of introducing a new rule

I’m thinking of introducing a new rule I picked up from this book I was reading.. Anyone who is late to a meeting has to submit $8 (200 roubles) which we later will use for coffee and cookies.

Lagos, Nigeria

Today is my second day in Lagos, Nigeria.  I came here for business, and was warmly welcomed by the client.  They met me at the airport and took me to my hotel.  I also heard, due to safety issues, in Nigeria picking up your associates or business partners is a must.

The weather reminds me of Nicaragua, just as hot and humid.  Can’t complain, since it is +5C in St.Petersburg and it is +30C here.  Apart from the weather, safety is a concern here.  Being warned about safety  I spend my time meeting with clients and eating out in the Hotel.

Than later today, I got brave enought and decided to venture out to the city.  I wanted to buy me some tradiational African wear, so I went to the local market, together with my collegue Wan Zul.  Now that was a new experience.  The street market stunk soo bad… Cars and bykes were swinging by faster than I had the time to run away from them.  It didn’t feel safe, so after I got what I wanted we rushed back to the Hotel.

Intrapreneurship vs Entrepreneurship

I’ve done few ventures in my past and I’m very familiar with hurdles and hardships that entrepreneurs face.  Intrapreneruship is somewthing I learned about in Grad school.  I always thought it was easier, in ways how it provided access to financial capital-one of the main hurdles for entrepreneurs.

How Intrapreneurship is different.

Now, however, I no longer think Intrapreneurship is easier.  I think it is different.  I believe it has a lot to do with aligning your venture with current company strategy, and also it envolves Leading Change.  Of course creativity has to stay within the boundries of corporate strategy, and your risks and rewards are less.

I’ve been putting together an innovative project that me and a few followers will soon pitch to the top.  Biggest hurdles that I see have to do with things like: corporate stagnation, politics, fear, lack of passion, lack of action and comfortism.  Which is pretty common and typical.

So I’ve taken Kotter 8-step approach to the Intrapreneurship case.  I believe I’m currently on a step 0. When this project gets appoved, than my team can move to steps 1+.

Also, I have taken a typical approach, by writing a business plan.  I guess it is kind of a habit.  But with so much unknown, there comes a time where we just gona have to pitch it.  We set the date: Early November.  One thing I’m sure of if this idea launches it will have to be fluid and to reach target growth.

Culture of Plastic Bags (Пакетщики) or plastic bag marketing.

Картинка 20 из 20981

It has been a little over a month since I formally moved to Russia.  Prior to that I spent nine years in the U.S.  After a month here there are certain things that one can notice and some are worth writing about.  So I though I should write about the Culture of Plastic Bags in Russia.

Plastic bags are common items owned by most Russians.  They are used and reused multiple times, until the bag looks very old and can be used no more.  Plastic bag is an accessory item of high importance, since men carry them everywhere and women carry their hand bags along with large plastic bags.  All this could be replaced with having one large bag, however this is a habit of most Russians which is hard to remove.

For the last two three weeks I’ve been noticing large number of people all over the city carrying specific plastic bag with bright colors painted all over it.  It was a plastic bag of a cosmetic retailer -Riv Gauche (Рив Гош).  People are seen carrying these bags everywhere from office to metro, to industrial site.  They were everywhere…

That, of course, puzzled me, since I couldn’t imagine Russian people running to a perfume retail store at 7 a.m. prior to attending work.   So they must have been using Riv Gauche for some reason other than carrying freshly purchased perfumes  and cosmetics.

гош

I was right.  People were just using branded Riv Gauche bags to carry personal items.  That is a common practice in Russia.  However,  why Riv Gauche?  Well their plastic bags are of high quality and of bright color combination.  Also carrying Riv Gauche bag positions you as a middle of the road earner making one look more presentable than with Lenta or Pyaterochka bag.  Maybe Russian consumer loves the way these bags look?  Also high geographical presence may play a role since this retail cosmetic chain has a shop in every part of the city.

Well, here is what regular consumer has to say about the reason he uses Riv Gauche plastic bags : “They are tough and easy to carry, plastic is strong, handles are soft and don’t cut into your hands.

Whatever the reason is for the high presence of Riv Gauche plastic bags in St.Petersburg is it the quality of the plastic bag or the status it gives you when you carry it, or the combination of the two.  Whatver the reason, Riv Gauche should be proud, since they got it right with the branding.  They have archieved phenomenal brand penetration along with a large crowd of brand hostages.  I can’t call them them brand champions since I don’t think this consumer knows what he is doing.

AvtoVaz is using crowdsourcing in naming new LADA car

I ran into this new article posted on Sostav.ru about AvtoVaz attempting  to use corwdsourcing to name its new LADA model.  I must say it is a great way to go about naming, plus I’m a crowdsourcing fan.  However, AvtoVaz is not doing it right.  So they attract the crowd by offering a brand new car to the winner of the competition and a trip to the plant.  However, they still include a clause that allows them to back out of it, and name the car however their majesty desires.  That clause in itself defeats the purpose.  I mean, stick to your words and your promise!

What is funny to watch, however, is sheer Russian public’s disgust with the vehicle and the abundance of funny, derogatory names they are able to come up with.  Now, granted you need to speak Russian to see humor in these, here are some funny examples: Lada Vedrover, Lada BenLaden, Lada MedVeput, Lada Dura, Lada Nenado, Lada Budla etc.

Some go as far as creating a Tag Line for the brand, here is an example of one of the bloggers:

“Lada. Your very last car!”

“Buy Lada and get a tool kit for free!”

“Lada. 1000 kilometers with no major repairs!”

“Lada. You will not get bored with me!”
